According to the label on the side of the locomotives,
they were rebuilt in 1996 for the NWP. It's hard to say when they
last moved, but they've been here long enough for vandals to smash windows
and steal gauges from the controls. Only four years after their rebuild,
and they need to head back to the shop.
Despite the deteriorating condition of the equipment in Willits, the
line appears not to be closed forever. The Northwestern Pacific runs
from San Francisco north to Humboldt. It's owned by the counties
it serves, and the government is working to reopen the line. The
California legislature has voted enough funding to reopen the line, and
the NWP claims it will restore service along the entire line by 2004.
Maybe some of these locomotives will roll again someday. |
