Once we're a few miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, traffic is light and we make good time heading up 101 to Willits.  Soon the clutter of the east bay tract houses gives way to hills and trees.  Reaching Willits, we turn west on CA 20 and begin a slow, winding journey to Fort Bragg.

CA 20 is a fun, twisting road through the redwood forest.  You won't ever drive quickly through here - unless you have an expensive sports car built not to plunge over cliffs or into trees.  I can't imagine driving this road at night either - at least not faster than 5 miles an hour.  We quickly realize that the drivers of motor homes feel this speed is also appropriate during the day.  We're not in a hurry, so we enjoy the view.

The alternative route is to take Highway 1 north from San Francisco.  I might do this someday when I have more time.
