In 1925, the California Western began using motor powered
cars to carry passengers and mails. The smell of the gasoline engines
was carried up the canyon by the sea breezes, and according to local myth,
residents said "You can smell 'em before you see 'em." And, thus
the name the Skunk Train.
The railroad still owns and operates two of these motorcars in the quieter
winter months - M-100 built in 1925 and M-300, built in 1935. |
