My favorite
bits of old equipment are often the unrestored parts - signs, builder's
plates, walk-over seats. The Santa Fe Southern owns marvelous equipment:
operational but worn locomotives, dusty dome cars, passenger cars from
different eras and places. It is a lovely line in a distant place.
(Unless you live in New Mexico, which of course, puts the line in your
backyard. New Mexico magazine carries a regular column featuring
stories of people who believe the state is part of a country to the south.) |
