Closer to
the station, one of Santa Fe Southern's two locomotives rests on a sidetrack
leaking fuel and oil into a black pool below. Several decaying cabooses
and a graffiti-covered Railway Post Office provide office and storage space
for the line.
The Santa Fe Southern was
constructed in 1880 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad to connect
Santa Fe with the ATSF mainline to the south. In the early 1990s,
ATSF sold off unprofitable short lines and the Santa Fe Southern was purchased
by private investors. The railroad provides freight services to a
handful of local shippers and tourist passenger service several days per
week. |
