The Southern Pacific Railroad closed this line in 1982
due to heavy damage from winter storms. Norm Clark, a railfan who
already owned and operated the narrow gauge Roaring Camp & Big Trees
Railroad, started negotiating with the Southern Pacific to buy and reopen
the line. In 1985, SP agreed to sell the line and Norm started working
to reopen it. Norm died of pneumonia three months after he bought
the line and long before it reopened. His wife took control of the
company and worked to complete her husband's dream of operating the line.
With a creek far below us, the line clings to the side of the mountains
as we head to Santa Cruz. |
