These coaches were built in the 1920s - about the same time
as the boardwalk - for a railroad on the other side of the country.
While time has changed the railroad, the boardwalk and the coach itself,
bits of the past remain.
The conductor tells me the safe in the corner of the coach was there
when the combine arrived at the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific.
It's never been opened and no one knows the combination..
The tread on the door sill still carries the mark of the original owner
of this car - B&M for the Boston and Maine - a railroad in the far
northeast of the United States. Once, this coach served commuters
and passengers 2,500 miles from where it now spends its days.
The door roller from Cleveland was probably installed by someone who
is now survived by their great grandchildren. And who can guess the
last time this lamp was oiled and lit?
