It’s time for a road trip, a really, really big-ass road
trip. It’s a road trip covering 9,000 miles in 40 days. It’s
a road trip from coast to coast in a tiny car with a pair of Jackie-O sunglasses.
Tomorrow morning, I jump in the MINI and points the tires eastward.
From San Francisco to Maine, the cross country journey will include a healthy
dose of roadside kitsch, railroads, queer bars and cheap hotels.
First stop: Ely,
Nevada.
The car is now fueled, washed and waiting for the suitcases, the GPS
unit is programmed and the CB radio is set to Channel 29*. The Official
Pre-Trip Odometer Reading is 6,178 miles. (What the hell am I
talking about? Click
here to find out.)
After three years of planning, plotting and scheming, Road Trip 2003
begins in less than 24 hours...
*Channel 29 is reportedly used by queer truckers.
