The California Railroad
Museum has the only
remaining cab forward locomotive.

The train passes through long snow sheds - shelters built
over the rails to protect the line from avalanches and slides. When
railroads used steam locomotives, the build up of exhaust gasses and steam
in the snow sheds and tunnels nearly asphyxiated the crews. To address
this problem, the Southern Pacific built special "cab forward" locomotives
- which put the crew at the front of the locomotive - ahead of the exhaust. |
