Rail Diesel Cars are powered by two diesel engines located below the car*.  The engines are connected to the to the wheels mechanically through a torque converter and a drive shaft.  The large raised section on the roof of the car houses the radiators and exhaust stacks.

*RDC-5s had a single diesel engine.
