SisterBetty.orgRail Tripping
Each locomotive has two opposing drive axles fitted with cog wheels.  These geared wheels mesh with the tenons of the center rail, allowing the locomotives to climb much steeper grades than conventional engines.  A single trip up the mountain consumes one ton of coal and 1,000 gallons of water.

On level ground, the locomotives appear to be bent.  This odd configuration allows the boiler to remain level as the train ascends the mountain.
