SisterBetty.orgRail Tripping
Built in the late 1860s, the cog railway climbs nearly 3,000 feet from 2,700 feet at Marshfield Station to 6,288 feet at the summit.  Along the route, the grade reaches more than 37% - a rise of 37 vertical feet in elevation for every 100 feet of forward movement.  A 34% grade puts the front of the coach fourteen feet above the rear.
