SisterBetty.orgRail Tripping
The coaches are unheated and the windows are shut tight as we make our way back down the mountain.  The speed of the train is controlled by the engineer on the ascent and by the brakeman on the descent.  Traveling down the mountain, the engine functions as an air compressor, using back pressure in the cylinders as braking force.  The brakemen sets hand brakes on both axles of the coach using handwheels.
