Located at the summit is the Mount Washington Observatory.  Staffed year round, this weather observatory records some of the most severe weather on the planet.  The observatory holds the record for the highest sustained winds - 231 miles per hour.  During the second week of January, 2003, the temperature with windchill fell to -107 degrees.

It is considerably calmer and warmer on the day we arrive.  The temperature at the summit is near 30 degrees.  The coach is unheated.  Passengers scramble for warmth inside the observatory.
