Located at the summit is the Mount
Washington Observatory. Staffed year round, this weather observatory
records some of the most severe weather on the planet. The observatory
holds the record for the highest sustained winds - 231 miles per hour.
During the second week of January, 2003, the temperature with windchill
fell to -107 degrees.
It is considerably calmer and warmer on the day we arrive. The
temperature at the summit is near 30 degrees. The coach is unheated.
Passengers scramble for warmth inside the observatory.
