The Esquimalt
and Nanaimo Railway travels the eastern edge of Vancouver Island, British
Columbia. Referred to as the E&N by its neglectful corporate
parent Rail America, the line is home to the last of a species - the Budd
RDC (Rail Diesel Car). Operated by VIA Rail, the RDCs provide daily
passenger service from Victoria northward.
Rail America was threatening
to close the E&N in late 2002 and it wasn't clear how much longer the
RDCs would be operating. I headed north for what might have been
the last season of RDC operation. |
