The Grand
Canyon Railroad runs north from Williams, about 32 miles west of Flagstaff,
to the Grand Canyon. Completed in 1901, the line was operated by
the Santa Fe Railroad and brought tourists and freight to the southern
edge of the canyon.
The railroad operated until
1968 when increasing competition from automobiles made the line unprofitable.
The line reopened in 1989 under private ownership.
We arrive at the station
an hour before departure. The line still runs steam locomotives and
#18 came from Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad in Michigan. |
