Our coach
once ran across Canada for VIA Rail. The interior still carries the
decoration of the former line and the lucite handrails are lit with yellow
lights.
The future we glimpsed on
the way to the Canyon is realized when the musical pair arrives in our
coach for the longest set of ear-bursting folk music I've ever endured.
Lacking cocktails or earplugs, we seek shelter elsewhere.
Later, the train is robbed
in yet another "Wild West" show.* When the robbers arrive in our
coach, they look at us and walk away without a word. I was ready
to break legs - even those of a faux criminal.
Gratuities Permitted...indeed.
(*The Grand Canyon Railroad
is so committed to its Wild West image that every promotional shot includes
cowboys with guns. This conflicts with history - just seven
years after the line was completed the Grand Canyon was designated a National
Monument and lumber, not cattle, was the primarily industry in the area.) |
