Railroads were built to serve industry and as a result,
it's common their terminals are in the less desirable areas of town.
As we leave San Francisco, we roll through the parts of the city you won't
see featured on postcards - unless the postcards are raising money for
toxic waste abatement.
I'm used to this part of riding railroads and often I find it fascinating.
The parts of cities that are the least desirable often have the most character
and history. At the same time, somewhere in the back of my head,
I believe we'll soon enjoy greener, cleaner scenery as the train continues
southward. |
